If you’re looking for a peppy, efficient compact SUV, check out the upcoming Volkswagen Taos. This brand-new model will fill a niche in the VW lineup, slotting below the family-favorite Tiguan and the upcoming ID.4 electric vehicle.
It boasts a 1.5-liter EA211 engine that’s designed to deliver impressive fuel economy alongside spirited driving dynamics. It’s an updated spin on the engine powering the popular Volkswagen Jetta, and it enables the Taos to deliver 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This dynamo is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission in front-wheel drive models. All-wheel drive models, on the other hand, come paired with a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission
This powertrain demonstrates the automaker’s commitment to diversifying and improving its lineup. Alongside offering electrified vehicles, VW continues to refine its combustion engines.
“While electric vehicles are stealing the headlines these days, we are continuing to make great strides with technology on our internal combustion engines,” explained Johan de Nysschen, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen Group of America. “The new 1.5-liter engine in the Taos uses the latest advances in gasoline-engine design to bring outstanding fuel economy to the compact SUV segment.”
