In June, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS equipped with the Manthey Performance Kit ran a blistering 6:43.300 lap at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. That incredible feat secured Porsche the record for fastest lap from a road-approved production car.
Porsche last held the record for fastest lap from Sept. 20, 2017, to July 26, 2018. That car, a Porsche 911 GT2 RS driven by Lars Kern, ran a lap that was ultimately bested by two production vehicles. So for Porsche and Kern, the goal was not simply to reclaim the Nürburgring lap record — it was to obliterate the previous mark and put the world on notice.
And obliterate they did. With the 6:43.300 lap time, the 911 GT2 RS crushed the standing record by 4.747 second. Riding on super-grippy Michelin® Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, the Porsche ran an average speed of around 115.5 mph.
“The 911 GT2 RS sticks to the track like glue with the Manthey Performance Kit — you feel as if you’re in a racing car, especially on faster corners. It is truly breathtaking how the car puts its 700 [horsepower] down, and how incredibly well it brakes while always remaining easy to control,” said Kern.
